New Cuyama

Three weeks have passed so quickly and my time in the Cuyama Valley has been breathtaking and unforgettable. Thank you to the families that welcomed me and thank you for the students for sharing their brilliance with me; I hope to co-create more spaces and opportunities to pass you the mic/camera/stage/canvas to listen more to the story you are unraveling.

The 6 Word Story

My second day in New Cuyama, I had the opportunity to meet the students, share a little bit about my work as a storyteller and mindful media educator. Before closing for the day, we unknowingly planted a seed. A 6 word story answering the prompt: What's The 1 Thing I can do which by doing it would everything else easier or unnecessary?

Let's Get Lit(erate)

Don't fall for the narrative of fear: it's not us VS them

it's all of us VS the problem.

Literacy is the foundation: To read and write to communicate the meanings embedded in the media around us. In essence, we explore the importance of reading the stories/stories around us to see how it influences the way the brain makes sense of our society.

By reading the world around us, we can now read the tale that runs through our minds and adjust it to our liking.

I Am (grateful)

Repeat the phrases as many times as you want:

I am strong, I am intelligent, I am capable. I am ____.

I am.

The participatory nature of affirmations is a joy to explore with young people. It's important to set aside time to consciously sew love into our narratives.

Cre-8 Love

By planting their 6-word seeds, students explored the power of mindful routines in nourishing their seed and their story.

Art, like being present, is a practice that develops with routines and habits. By returning again and again to a work of art, we continue to give more care and detail to a work of art that we seek to express. As artists and people we sprout in different ways: each flower has its color, aroma, and its part in our community garden.

Multi-Media Garden

Like most gardens in the early spring, this is a work in progress. But you can already see the beauty that has begun sprouting in the students' garden.

Look how the seeds that started with only 6 words are growing.  🌱 ✨
